Tower Crane Collapse in Vancouver

Tower crane collapse in Vancouver

A tower crane came crashing down across a street and onto a home in Vancouver on Tuesday evening after a major fire broke out on the building it was working on.

The incident occurred in the Dunbar area of the city, when the six story timber frame residential building that the crane was working on caught fire and turned into a major blaze. By the time the fire had reached its peak it had done enough damage to the crane’s foundation and lower mast, to cause it to collapsed, with the top landing on a home on the other side of the street. In total 81 people were evacuated from their homes, with some yet to return.

A couple of firefighters suffered minor injuries, otherwise, miraculously, no one was hurt in the incident. The whole thing was captured on video which you can see below.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services stated that the fire and the circumstances that led to the crane collapsing remain under investigation. It also said that the building was a write off - which was kind of obvious - and will be demolished. The developer is Sightline Properties, the crane was supplied by local tower crane rental company Copal.

We have received numerous photographs, which we very much appreciate, but the majority of them are poor, the three videos below provide a better view of the scene during and after the incident occurred.
